Chapter Fourteen

Brash called home later that afternoon. “Don’t bother waiting on me for dinner. I have a meeting. They’re feeding us, so I have a feeling it may run late.”

“New lead?” Madison asked.

“Maybe, but it’s still too soon to say. Why don’t you treat Megan to dinner out tonight? It will do you good. You’ve both been worrying too much lately, as it is.”

“With good reason. But you’re right. Going out sounds like a great idea.”

Megan was more than receptive to the idea, so that evening, they found themselves at Montelongo’s, munching on crispy tortilla chips and salsa while they waited on their entrees.

“Daddy has a lead?” The auburn-haired beauty adjusted the vibrant blue glasses on her nose. They matched today’s pair of leggings and the long necklace swinging against her long-tailed white blouse. Megan always wore clothes that were as trendy and coordinated as Derron’s, and the exact opposite of her stepmother’s. Everyone teased Madison about wearing clothes from Granny Bert’s closet, but she chose to think of her understated wardrobe as classical.

“He sounded cautiously optimistic, so yes, that’s the impressive I got.”

“I hope they catch these people soon, so we can all breathe easier, and our lives can go back to normal.”

“Sweetheart, your father appreciates you being here, but you don’t have to stay, you know. He understands you have a busy schedule with college.”

“I’m not just here for him. I’m here for you, too, Mama Maddy.” She reached out to grip her stepmother’s hand. “I need to be here. For him, for you, and for me. So unless you’re kicking me out…”

“Never!”

“Then until further notice, you’re stuck with me.”

After they had an enjoyable dinner and walked to the parking lot, Madison saw Delphine Craddock and two young men getting out of a nearby car.

“Hello, Delphine,” Madison greeted the woman with a polite smile.

“Oh, Madison! I didn’t expect to see you here.” She looked surprised but pleased. The welcoming smile on her face pegged her as anything but a killer.

“We just had a wonderful dinner, but I promise, we left enough for you. This is my daughter, Megan. Megan, this is Delphine Craddock. She recently moved here.”

“Hello, Megan. What beautiful hair you have! Oh, and this is my grandson Landon, and his friend Jeff. They’re down here getting me settled in.”

Both young men looked at Megan with appreciation. It took them a moment to notice Madison had extended her hand in introduction. She smiled, most of it directed to their reaction to her stepdaughter.

“Madison deCordova,” she said.

Landon politely drug his eyes off the beautiful young woman. “Nice to meet you.” As an afterthought, he asked, “Did you say deCordova?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“We met a Brash deCordova this morning.”

“That’s my father,” Megan said in obvious pride. “He’s the chief of police in The Sisters.”

“Yeah, he explained the whole Sisters thing to us,” Jeff said. “It’s a little confusing for newcomers.”

“I’m sure it is,” Megan agreed, her twinkling laughter enchanting both males. “I’ve lived here since I was a baby, so it seems normal to me.
